Monterey County Jail Roster

The Monterey County Jail Inmate Roster is a public resource that allows anyone to find out who is currently in custody in Monterey County, California. Public information about current and recently released inmates can be found on the MontereyCourt.us website. Additionally, the data is available through the official website of the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, in person at the jail reception, or by phone. The roster allows you to check an individual's custody status, view charges filed, and find out the booking number. This transparency tool is maintained by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, which regularly updates the data on its website.

Find Monterey Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment an arrested individual is registered in jail. This occurs after an arrest — before the court hears the case.

During booking, the following data is recorded:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of intake
  • Charges filed
  • Arresting agency
  • Personal details of the detainee (name, date of birth)

These records are available online through the Sheriff's Office inmate log. It only displays individuals currently in custody. If you need a past booking record or a copy of an arrest report, submit a records request directly through the Monterey County Sheriff's Office website — there is an option to "Request an Arrest Record."

To obtain your own state-level criminal history, contact the California Department of Justice. Processing requires fingerprints and a $25 fee. If the individual has been transferred to a state facility, check the California Department of Corrections CIRIS system.

Search the Monterey Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in the search field. If necessary, add the first name to narrow the results. Some practical tips:

  • Use exact spelling — the system is sensitive to letter errors.
  • If the last name is common (e.g., Garcia or Smith), be sure to include the first name.
  • Try spelling variations if the name may have different transliterations.

Search by Booking Number

The booking number is the most accurate way to find a specific individual. It is usually provided to relatives during the detainee's first call or when contacting the jail.

If the Search Yields No Results

The absence of a name in the roster may mean several things:

  1. The individual has not yet been fully registered — there is a time lag between arrest and appearance in the system.
  2. The individual has already been released on bail or by court order.
  3. The individual has been transferred to another facility — for example, a state prison. Check this through CIRIS.
  4. The last name was entered incorrectly.

If none of the options work, call the jail directly at (831) 755-3722.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Monterey

The Sheriff's Office updates the inmate log periodically throughout the day, but it does not occur in real-time. Between the actual booking and the record appearing online, it can take from a few minutes to several hours — depending on staff workload and time of day.

Important things to understand about the roster's limitations:

  • The roster only displays individuals who are currently in custody. Once released, the record disappears from the list.
  • This is not an archive of all past bookings. Historical data requires a separate request to the Sheriff's Office.
  • Data entry delays occur — especially on weekends and holidays when staff is reduced.
  • Information about minors is not published.

To check court records related to an inmate's case, use the Monterey County Superior Court's criminal records section. A criminal case search request can be submitted in person at the Salinas Courthouse or by mail to:

Superior Court of California, County of Monterey
Attention: Records240 Church StreetSalinas, CA 93901

The fee for a name search is $15.00. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the Superior Court.
